Workplace motivation arises from an employee’s intrinsic enthusiasm about the drive to accomplish activities regarding work. Motivation is that internal drive that would cause the employee to initiate work related behavior, determine the form of this behavior, its intensity, direction and duration. Motivation is a complex driving force that can be influenced both externally and internally by biological, social, intellectual and emotional factors. The triggers that motivate people will be unique for each individual; for some it may be money, and for others it could be intrinsic satisfaction or wanting to make a difference. Despite what drives the employees to achieve high, it needs to be managed and balanced. Too much motivation in one area will hinder other areas.

How you can motivate yourself

It is important that you use appropriate tools in order to induce this motivation within you. Some tools that can be used are;

1. Change- It is important to change things, especially things that are not going well. With this it is essential to figure out what the right outcome should be, and then you take the necessary steps to develop the action of change.

2. Goals- It is essential that you figure out your goals in order to stay motivated. However it is important that this goal is something you are passionate about. The next step will be to identify an appropriate course of action that can be taken to achieve the goal.

3. Accountability- Find someone who will help you to be accountable to yourself, who will ensure you stay motivated. Also be willing to return the favor.

4. Associating the right people- It is important to be around people who are motivated and inspired as you will also eventually follow their footsteps.

5. Cop an attitude- Your attitude is one thing you have control over. Therefore, staying in control of your attitude and approach to workplace challenges is vital to stay motivated.

How an employer can motivate an employee

It is also essential that employers play their role in motivating their employees. What an employer needs to figure out initially is how they can inspire employee motivation at work, and thereafter develop an appropriate work environment that would create motivation in people. Creating this environment involves both intrinsically satisfying and extrinsically encouraging factors such as;

6. Trustworthy leadership- leaders who are constantly looking out for their employees’ best interests will be able to win the trust of the employees, who in return will be motivated to work better.

7. Career advancement- Employees will be highly motivated to perform well if it means career advancement awaits them. By opening doors of opportunity an employer will be able to sustain high levels of motivation.

8. Happiness and respect- This is one of the greatest motivators for better performance. Hence an employer needs to be aware if their employees are satisfied with their work. Also it is important to not just assume they are happy, but rather to talk to them and find out.

9. Stable future- Everyone wants a stable future, hence people are motivated to have safety and security. It is therefore essential to for a leader to be mindful of providing security and stability. Transparent and regular communication about important factors

10. Providing regular employee recognition, feedback and coaching

Employers can use a combination of these tools to motivate their employees. However, they need to bear in mind that every employee needs to be motivated differently and not with a ‘one size fits all’ approach which most companies practice through HR policies and compensation systems.
