Govt. to uplift vocational training sector to provide more opportunities for youth

President Maithripala Sirisena says his government will give high priority to improve country’s vocational training sector to provide more opportunities for the country’s youth who are unable to receive higher education.

Speaking at the progress review meeting on National School of Business Management, which is under the Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training, at the President’s Office Wednesday, the President said the physical and human resources of the countrywide vocational training centers will be enhanced as the training at these institutions is weakened due to lack of resources.

The President said the vocational training centers should be expanded to accommodate more students as Sri Lanka’s workforce lacks critical job-specific skills that are in high demand, threatening the country’s sustained economic growth. He said it is important to identify the future goals for the youth of the country and guide them to reach their targets.

The President emphasised that there should not be any restrictions placed at district level limiting enrolments. He further suggested starting Tamil and English medium courses in the areas where majority of students belonging to the minority Tamil and Muslim communities.

The President also reviewed the progress of the Green University being constructed by the NSBM. A land extent of 26 acres at Pitipana, Homagama has been allocated for Sri Lanka’s first ever Green University Township. The fully pledged university complex includes student accommodation, sports facilities, swimming pool, auditorium, library facilities, study areas and an open theater. The university with state-of-the-art-facilities can offer 75 courses and will house 30,000 local and international undergraduates.

The President also discussed the proposed national vocational training center to be set up in the Polonnaruwa district.

Minister of Skills Development and Vocational Training Mahinda Samarasinghe, State Minister Palitha Range Bandara and secretary to the Ministry P. Ranepura also participated in the discussions.
