Thinking of a career change? Four questions to ask yourself first

We have all experienced those slow months, where there’s not much to do but stare far into the computer screen. Those are usually the time where you find yourself wondering how your job could get interesting or how things could change if you had a career change especially when you see someone from another department handling some exciting stuff. You just might have some areas in mind or many want to just dip their toe in the career pool to see what you might like or perhaps fit into. Before you jump head first into the very deep whirlpool of career options, here are a few questions that might help the decision easier.

To change or not to change?

Now if you are on the fence about the change, and not sure if you would handle it well. Take a break from looking and list down a few pros and cons of the current job you work. It could just be that you are searching for a different company, and not a complete career change. Take a good look at your current position and make note of the changes that you would like to see.

Which fits better?

If you are set on the decision of a complete change in your career path, you will need to reevaluate your qualifications and general suitability for that position. Update your resume and look into ways that you could further your knowledge in the field. If it requires experience look into jobs that would fine-tune your skills and at the same time give you the experience needed.

Will it be too much?

If you are at a place that does not permit the required commitment and time to make the transition then rethink the choice. Or make arrangements to slowly make the transaction without too much effect on your current state. If you are within a tight schedule or have too much distractions in your life take time, clear your schedule and don’t rush.

Will I get what I want?

Every job requires a bit of grunt work, that many of us find very basic and menial. Not every day is exciting and it can become harder especially at the beginning. But you need to question whether the work that is required of you is capable of satisfying your requirement. Will I like it? Is it intellectually stimulating?

Everyone ponder of change in their career at one point and whether you go ahead with it or not is completely up to you. Do you enjoy just thinking of a better time or are you ready to move. Change is a very hard choice and it can have different effects on different people. Much like a business decision needs research do your homework to make sure it’s the right choice you.
